Renowned Urdu poet, philosopher and thinker Sir Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot in Punjab in undivided India [now Pakistan] in 1877.

One of the greatest Urdu poets ever, his name is taken alongside the great Mir Taqi Mir and Ghalib. Allama Iqbal is known for his Nazms and particularly the famous 'Shikwa & Jawab-e-Shikwa'. He passed away in 1938.

जब इश्क सिखाता है आदाब-ए-ख़ुद-आगाही* 
खुलते हैं ग़ुलामों पर असरार-ए-शहंशाही 

अत्तार** हो, 'रूमी' हो, राज़ी हो, 'ग़ज़ाली'  हो

*Especially, when communities or marginalized groups face atrocities and often agencies that are supposed to take action, turn Nelson's eye, apart from allowing the mobs to go after the victims. 

The message is that oppressors have come earlier too and gone, it may take time but human resilience and fight for ideals and justice continues. Context--recent incidents, right-wing groups rallies, attacks, vandalism and then laws applied selectively, seizure of properties and razing the structures.

This poem is a tribute to one of the greatest icons of twentieth century, Babasahab Dr BR Ambedkar who made immense contribution towards uplifting the scheduled castes and backward communities. Shams Ur Rehman Alavi is a Bhopal-based Urdu poet. 

वह तुम को तिलिस्म के दरवाज़े तक ले गया

वहाँ लटके सदियों पुराने क़ुफ़्ल* की चाबी भी दे गया 

और जाते जाते कुछ मंतर भी बता गया

तुमने मंतर सुन लिए 

चाबी कहीं टाँग दी

NOTE: This Urdu nazm was written when there were a series of violent incidents directed against Dalits, and at that point of time, the poet felt that had the community imbibed his teachings, the situation would have been different.

Dr BR Ambedkar had tremendous farsightedness and he had not just found the ills but had also given the prescription to the followers as to how they can tackle casteist oppression. His struggle led to a tremendous change, however, casteist violence and casteism remain a major issue in the country. In fact, Dr Ambedkar had cautioned his followers as well. The verse is a poetic tribute to his farsightedness.

[नोट: डॉ भीमराव आंबेडकर न सिर्फ भारत के संविधान के निर्माता बल्कि बीसवीं सदी की दुनिया की बड़ी शख्सियतों में से एक थे. उन्होंने दलितों और पिछड़ों के साथ ज़ात की बुनियाद पर होने वाले ज़ुल्म और छुआछूत के खिलाफऐसी जद्दोजहद की जिसका कोई मुक़ाबला नहीं. 

पूरी ज़िंदगी उन्होंने अपने समाज को जागरूक करने के लिए वक़्फ़ कर दी और इस समाज के मसाएल और उनके हल भी बताये. ये नज़्म उस वक़्त लिखी गयी थी जब दलितों के खिलाफ वायलेंस की एक साथ कई घटनाएं हुईं. इस नज़्म में यही मेसेज है कि अगर उनकी तालीम को सही मानों में लोग समझते, ख़ास तौर पर बताये गए नुस्खे जिसकी तरफ उन्होंने इशारा भी किया था, तो जो कुछ ज़ुल्म और असमानता अभी भी हम देख रहे, वह नहीं होता. महान शख्सियतों के साथ अक्सर ऐसा होता है मगर डॉ आंबेडकर ने अपने समाज को चेताया भी था. नज़्म को इस कांटेक्स्ट में पढ़ा जाए ]
