Urdu poetry in praise of Lord Rama: Iqbal's famous Nazm 'Ram'

Legendary Urdu poet Muhammad Iqbal was born in Sialkot in Punjab in undivided India [today's Pakistan] in 1877.

Iqbal is considered of the greatest Urdu poets ever, his name is taken alongside the great Mir Taqi Mir and Ghalib. He passed away in 1938, in undivided India.

This is an excerpt from his Nazm [verse] in praise of Lord Rama. Read this poem, that praises India's philosophy and height of the thought. Read the Nazm:

लबरेज़ है शराब-ए-हकीकत से जाम-ए-हिन्द
सब फ़लसफ़ी हैं ख़ित्तए मगरिब के राम-ए-हिन्द

ये हिंदियों के फ़िक्र-ए-फलक-रस का है असर
रिफअत* में आसमां से भी ऊंचा है बाम-ए-हिन्द

इसी देस में हुए हज़ारों मलक सरश्त
मशहूर जिनके दम से है दुनिया में नाम-ए-हिन्द

है राम के वुजूद पे हिन्दोस्तां को नाज़
अहल-ए -नज़र समझते हैं उसको इमाम-ए-हिन्द

Translation In Hindi:

1. पूरा विश्व भारत के ज्ञान और फलसफे का मुरीद है 
2. भारतीय सोच और दर्शन की ऊंचाई आसमानों से भी ऊपर है और पश्चिम भी इस को मानता है 
3. ये वह भूमि है जहां देवदूत जैसे लोग पैदा हुए और हिन्द का नाम ऊंचा किया 
4. राम के वुजूद पर हिंदुस्तान को नाज़ है, वह इमाम-ए-हिन्द हैं

Translation In English:

First couplet poetically talks about the wine of truth being filled to the brim with Indian thought and philosophy and even the West accept Indian thought's superiority

Second couplet praises the high flight of Indian mind and that India's place is above even the high heavens

The third couplet tells that people with angel like qualities were born on this land and hence India has great regard all over the world

The fourth couplet praises Lord Rama, saying that India is proud of his personality and he is the Imam-e-Hind. Imam is world used for the supreme leader.

Dil bhi aye 'Dard', qatra-e-khoo.n thaa
aa.nsuo.n mein kahiiN giraa hoga

This famous couplet is often quoted by poetry lovers. It is part of this ghazal that will give you a taste of the language of poetry in eighteenth century.

Khwaja Mir Dard [1721-1785] is, of course, one of the masters of classical Urdu poetry. Commonly recalled as Dard Dehlvi, he was among the three most prominent Urdu poets of eighteenth century, along with Mir Taqi Mir and Mirza Sauda--much before Ghalib. Read the ghazal:

जग में कोई न टुक हँसा होगा
कि न हंसने में रो दिया होगा

उसने क़सदन* भी मेरे नाले** को

Poet Mustafa Zaidi's famous ghazal: Mere ghar ke raaste mein kahin kahkashan naheen hai...

Mustafa Zaidi was a famous Urdu poet who was born in Allahabad. After partition, he shifted to Pakistan.

This is one of his famous ghazals. At least two couplets of this ghazal, are oft-quoted. The last couplet is mistakenly attributed to other poets.

He died in mysterious circumstances in a hotel room. It was never clear whether he ended his life or was poisoned. Read his ghazal:

किसी और ग़म में इतनी ख़लिश निहाँ नहीं है
ग़म-ए-दिल मेरे रफीको! ग़म-ए-राएगाँ नहीं है

कोई हम-नफ़स नहीं है, कोई राज़दाँ नहीं है
फ़क़त एक दिल था अब तक सो वह मेहरबां नहीं है

मेरी रूह की हकीकत मेरे आंसुओं से पूछो

Eminent poet Zafar Gorakhpuri's selected Urdu couplets

Zafar Gorakhpuri is an established Urdu poet, who is known for his distinct style of poetry.

Though hailing from Gorakphur in Uttar Pradesh, he has settled in Mumbai. Apart from ghazals, he also writes 'dohas'. Several of his shairi collections have been published.

Ghalib's shayari: Famous ghazal 'Jo teri bazm se nikla so pareshan nikla'

Mirza Asadullah Khan 'Ghalib', was born in Agra in 1797.

He served in the court of last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar and also saw the destruction of Delhi, in 1857.

Faiz Ahmad Faiz' famous revolutionary verse: Lazim hai ki ham bhi dekhenge...

Renowned poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz had become a legend in his lifetime.

Faiz was born in 1911 in Sialkot [Punjab] in today's Pakistan. Few attained as much popularity and international acclaim as Faiz. He passed away in 1984. Read his famous Nazm [poem]:

हम देखेंगे
लाज़िम है कि हम भी देखेंगे
वोह दिन कि जिस दिन का वादा है
जो लौह-ए-अज़ल में लिखा है
जब ज़ुल्म-ओ-सितम के कोह-ए -गराँ
