मिली जो जौन के रंगे सियाह फ़ाम के साथ

वो ज़र ख़रीद मुअर्रिख़ पिछड़ गए तुझसे

सिखाया तेरी शहादत ने बोलना सब को

ये मारेका हुआ आग़ाज़ इख़्तेताम के साथ

उठाए लाशे जवां लड़खड़ाते क़दमों से

voh zar khareed mo'arrikh pichhaD gaye tujh se

na chal sake tere rahwaar-e-barq-gaam ke saath

The tragedy of Karbala has inspired mankind for ages. 

 

Countless Urdu poets have used 'Karbala' as a symbol, in fact, it is one of the most powerful expressions in Urdu poetry.

It is a metaphor, it exhorts to raise voice against tyranny, to resist and fight.

The message is to stand by the principles, against all odds. Numerous poets have used it in poetry.

The martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, has inspired not just Muslims but people belonging to different faiths, for centuries.

 

Innumerable elegiac verses have been written by poets in Urdu, Persian, Arabic and other languages, recalling the events at the battle of Karbala. As the month of Muharram begins, we share these couplets:

हुसैन, तुम नहीं रहे, तुम्हारा घर नहीं रहा

Ruler is Hussain, Emperor is Hussain,

Classical master poet Brijmohan Dattatreya Kaifi's ghazal: Aur hi kuchh baagh-e-aalam ki hawa ho jayegi...

Pt Brijmohan Dattatreya 'Kaifi' [alternative spelling: Brajmohan Datatriya], who was born in 1866, was a renowned Urdu poet, scholar of Urdu-Persian, author and a master of classical Urdu. 

He represented the Dehlvi school and along with Nawab Saae'l, Bekhud Dehlvi and Amanarth Sahir, formed the quartet of Urdu legends in Delhi. He passed away in 1955. Now read the ghazal: 

देख लेना तुम कि दुनिया क्या से क्या हो जाएगी
और ही कुछ बाग़-ए-आलम की हवा हो जाएगी

क़िस्से सब दैर-ओ-हरम के मिट जाने को हैं
बांग, नाक़ूस ओ अज़ाँ की हमनवा हो जायेगी

तंग-नज़री और तअस्सुब का अमल उठ जायेगा
क़ौमियत, इंसानियत का आइना हो जायेगी

अम्न, जंग और अज़्म-ए-ख़ूंरेज़ी पे ग़ालिब आएगा
वजह हुब्बे ख़ल्क़, हुब्बे किब्रिया हो जाएगी

tang-nazri aur taa'ssub ka amal uTh jayega
