Mirza Ghalib's famous ghazal: Ishq mujh ko nahiiN, wahshat hi sahi...

Mirza Ghalib [1797-1869] is one of the greatest poets of all times. He is definitely the most celebrated Urdu poet, whose fame spread across the world.

This is a beautiful ghazal, in simple words, but which shows the poet's command over Taksaali Urdu idiom. In this ghazal, he used his earlier 'takhallus' [nom de plume] 'Asad', and not Ghalib, in the last couplet.

Mini  Urdu-English dictionary

[vahshat=wild, wildness, qataa=break, end]
[adaawat=enmity, hostility] [wasl=union, meeting of lovers]

Now read the same ghazal in Roman English transliteration:

ishq mujhko nahiiN, vahshat hi sahii
meri vahshat, teri shohrat hi sahii

qata'a kiije na talluq hamse
kuchh nahiiN hai, to adaavath hi sahii

ham bhi dushman to nahiiN, haiN apne
Ghair ko tujh se mohabbat hii sahii

kuchh to de, aye-falak-e-naa-insaaf!
aah-o-faryaad kii rukhsat hii sahii

yaar se chheD chalii jaaye, Asad
gar nahiiN wasl, to hasrat hii sahii

Mirza Ghalib
