Poet Balraj Komal's Urdu verse 'Akeli': Poem on the aftermath of the partition of India-Pakistan in 1947

Balraj Komal [1928-2013] was a leading Urdu poet, who is especially known for his modernist Nazms.

This verse* 'Akeli' describes the plight of a girl who has lost her entire family during the horrific killings and riots at the time of partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.

Now read the Nazm in Roman English:

Ajnabi, apne qadmo.n ko roko zaraa
Jaantii huuN tumhare liye Ghair huuN
Phir bhii Thehro, zara

Sunte jaao, ye ashkoN bharii daastaaN
Saath lete chalo ye mujassam fuGhaaN
Aaj dunia meN meraa koii bhii nahiiN

Merii ammii nahiiiN
Mere abba nahiiN
Merii aapaa nahiiN
Mere nanhe se maasuum bhayya nahhiN
Merii asmat kii maGhrur kirneN nahiiN

Voh Gharaunda nahiiN jiske saaye tale
loriyoN ke tarannum ko sunti rahi
phool chunti rahii, geet gaati rahii,
muskuraati rahii
aaj kuchh bhii nahiiN….
Aaj duniya meN mera koii bhii nahiiN

Ajnabi apne qadmo.n ko roko zaraa
Sunte jaao ye ashkoN bhari daastaaN
Saath lete chalo ye mujassam fuGhaaN

Meri Ammi bano
Mere Abba bano
Merii aapa bano

Mere nanhe se maasoom bhaiya bano
Merii asmat kii maGhruur kirneN bano

Mere kuchh to bano
Mere kuchh to bano

Mere kuchh to bano!!

[Akeli is a powerful and emotional Nazm, which struck chord with an entire generation in post-Partition India and Pakistan. Lakhs were died in the communal violence on both sides of border and women were the worst sufferers, as they lost their families who were killed in the dance of death. Hence, it is an important poem in the literature of the era in the sub-continent.]
