Shahid Parvez Sayed's Nazm: 'Ration Card', an Urdu poem

Mumbai-based Shahid Parvez Sayed's Ration-card* is an intense verse.

Perhaps, it would have been more apt had the poet given it the title 'Yeh Dil Ruk Jayega. [This heart will stop], the line which comes at the end of the verse, as this poem totally grips your heart and emotions. Read this Nazm in Urdu, Roman & Hindi scripts:

Now read Roman transliteration:

Ghar ke Ration Card par tumhaaraa naam dekhaa
usey bhii duusre un naamo.n ki tarah
kaaT diyaa gayaa thaa
jo ab saath nahiiN rahe..
yaani, tumhare hisse kaa anaaj bhii ab
mujh tak nahiiN aata

ek zamaana woh bhi tha jab
tum kachchii pakkii rotiyaaN banaa kar
jale hue hisse khud khaa kar
mujhe behla liya karti thiiN
aaj tumhare naam kaa rizq bhii
tumhari yaadon ki tarah
mujh pe haraam hai

go waqt ne hamaare taalluq rok diye
par ye bhi sach hai
un kacche pakke luqmoN se
jo Khoon banaa thaa
jism main mere wohi rawaaN hai
dil ki sharyaano main raqs hai jaari
zehan ke gehraaiyoN se wohi ayaaN hai

jis din maiN tumhare haathoN kii
adh-jali rotiyoN kaa zaaiqa bhuul jaauNgaa
us din ye dil ruk jaayega
dauDtaa Khuun tham jaayega...
tab main bhii vahiiN kahiiN so jauungaa!

Shahid Parvez Sayed

[*Ration card was a document more important in in pre-liberalised India when grains were issued to almost all the families through Public Distribution System. It carried names of each individual in a family. Though ration card exists even now, owing to free market, it has lost its importance in the society]
