Josh Malihabadi was among the strongest poetic voice of the 20th century Urdu poetry in the Indian sub-continent.
He belonged to Pathan family settled in Malihabad near Lucknow, the heart of Urdu world, in undivided India. Especially a poet of Nazm, he was a freedom fighter who wrote courageous poetry against Imperial British rule but sad at the plight of Urdu, left for Pakistan.
क़दम इंसान का राह-ए-दहर में थर्रा ही जाता है
चले कितना ही कोई बच के ठोकर खा ही जाता है
नज़र ख्वाह कितनी ही हकाएक आशना, फिर भी
हुजूम-ए-कशमकश में आदमी घबरा ही जाता है
ख़िलाफ़-ए-मसलहत मैं भी समझता हूँ, मगर वाएज़
वो आते हैं तो चेहरे पे तग़ैय्युर* आ ही जाता है
हवाएं ज़ोर कितना ही लगाएं आंधियां बन कर
मगर जो घिर के आता है वो बादल छा ही जाता है
शिकायत क्यूँ इसे कहते हो ये फितरत है इंसान की
मुसीबत में ख़याल-ए-ऐश-ए-रफ्ता आ ही जाता है
समझती हैं माल-ए-गुल में क्या ज़ोर-ए-फितरत है
सहर होते ही कलियों को तबस्सुम आ ही जाता है

qadam insaaN ka raah-e-dahar meN tharraa hii jaata hai
chale kitnaa hii koii bach ke Thokar khaa hii jaataa hai
nazar Khwaah kitnii hii haqaaeq aashnaa, phir bhii
hujuum-e-kashmkash meN aadmii ghabraa hii jaataa hai
khilaaf-e-maslahat maiN bhi samajhta huN, magar vaaez
vo aate haiN to chehre pe taGaiyyur aa hii jaataa hai
havaaeN zor kitnaa hii lagaaeN aaNdhiyaaN ban kar
magar jo ghir ke aataa hai vo baadal chhaa hii jaataa hai
shikaayat kyuuN ise kahte ho ye fitrat hai insaaN kii
musiibat meN khayaal-e-aish-e-rafta aa hii jaataa hai
samajhtii haiN maal-e-gul meN kyaa zor-e-fitrat hai
sahar hote hii kaliyoN ko tabassum aa hii jaataa hai
