Legendary Urdu poet Allama Iqbal's ghazal: Tere ishq ki inteha chahta hun...

Sir Muhammad Iqbal who is more often termed as Allama Iqbal [1877-1938] is probably the most famous Urdu poet after Ghalib.

Iqbal gave a new diction to Urdu Nazm. He also wrote Tarana-e-Hindi, the most popular unofficial patriotic song in India. Iqbal died nine years before India's partition & the birth of Pakistan. Read his ghazal:

[zaahid=pious, religious man]

Now read the ghazal in Roman script:

tere ishq kii intehaa chaahtaa huuN
merii saadgii dekh, kyaa chaahtaa huuN

sitam ho ki ho vaada-e-be-hijaabii
koii baat sabr-aazmaa chaahtaa huuN

yah jannat mubaarak rahe zaahidoN ko
ki maiN aapkaa saamnaa chaahtaa huuN

zaraa sa to dil huuN magar shoKh itnaa
vahii lantaraanii sunaa chaahtaa huuN

koii dam kaa mehmaaN huuN, e ahl-e-mehfil
chiraaG-e-sahar huuN, bujhaa chaahtaa huuN

bharii bazm meN raaz kii baat kah dii
baDaa be-adab huuN, sazaa chaahtaa huuN
